Wenda "Kay" Rieken

Wenda “Kay” Rieken, 85, of Grand Island, NE died on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at her home. A Memorial Service will be at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, March 29, 2024, at Apfel Funeral Home with Derek Apfel officiating. Burial will follow in the Cedarview Cemetery in Doniphan, NE. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 P.M. at Apfel Funeral Home on Thursday, March 28, 2024. Memorials are suggested to the Humane Society. She was born on June 15, 1938, at Doniphan, NE to Mertin and Lela (Stiles) Boroff. She grew up in Wood River, NE and received her education at Wood River High School. Kay was united in marriage to James Rieken in June of 1964 at Hastings, NE. After which the couple lived in Bassett, NE where she was a bartender. They then moved to Grand Island where she continued to bartend until being employed by MNIS and ILC. 

Kay was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Platte Deutsche, and the Daughters of the American Legion. She enjoyed gardening, spending time with family, and her many dogs. 

She is survived by her son, Michael (Renee) Rieken, daughters: Lori Rieken, Lisa (Mike) Wieczorek, and Michelle (Kyle) Stratman; seven grandchildren: Kendyl, Dillon, Kaylan, MiKayla, MaKenzie, Shelby, and Cody; two great grandchildren: Baylor and Sophia; brother, Jim Boroff; and sister, Kaffie Alber.

Kay is preceded in death by her parents; siblings: Leva Aufdenkamp, Jack Boroff, Carole Vejvoda-Denman, Karen Scott; and son, James Carl.
