Virginia Marie (Potter) McCurdy, 92 of Wood River and Sumner, NE passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2025, at her daughter's home in Sumner, NE. Funeral services will be at 10 AM Thursday, October 9, 2025, at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River, NE with Derek Apfel, CFC officiating. Burial will follow in the Sumner Cemetery in Sumner, NE. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5-7PM at the funeral home in Wood River, NE. Memorials are suggested to the Wood River Fire Dept., Wood River Rescue Unit, or the Sumner Rescue unit. Virginia was born on February 27, 1933, to Lloyd and Laura (Summers) Potter in Dawson County, Nebraska.
Virginia started her café work as a teenager at Effie McFarland’s restaurant in Sumner. She also worked for Effie’s husband in their grocery store. She graduated from Sumner High School in 1951 and then went on to work in Kearney for a grocery store. After moving back to Sumner, she worked at Baldwins in Kearney then leased the Sumner Café from Brown’s. She ran it until 1975 when she moved to Colorado for two years. She then moved to Wood River, Neb. in 1977. She worked at Skelly’s Café, Prosser Bar, Union 76, and Dowds Steak House.
She married Willard Potter of Sumner in 1957. Virginia then married Marvin McCurdy of Fullerton in 1986, then she worked at the Snack Shack in Wood River before she leased it and then bought it, making it Ginny’s Café, which she ran until her retirement in 2014. She loved her customers and knew what they wanted as soon as they walked into the café.
Virginia is survived by her daughter, Theresa Childers of Sumner; three sons: Dale of Wood River, NE, Mike (Deb) Potter of Holdrege, NE and Brad (Jessica) Potter of Sidney, NE; sister, Dorothy Krance of Bolus, NE; special aunt, Georgia Goodrich of Rockford, IL; grandchildren: Sherry Deher of Stratton, CO, Sandy Boon of Eddyville, NE, Justin Potter of Merna, NE, Bobbie Potter of Paxton, NE and Jed Potter of Sumner, NE. She also leaves behind: numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, several stepchildren, step grandchildren, and step great grandchildren, many friends, and 2 special lady friends: Rosemary Brannagan and Rita Ernest.
She was proceeded in death by her parents; two husbands; one sister, Peg Parks; two brothers: Wilbert (Snooks) and LeRoy (Butch); two sisters-in-law: Marie Potter and Mary Jane Potter.
