Melissa was born to Samuel Wiggins and Pennie (Cooper) in Warrenton, NC on May 14, 1962. She attended public schools, including Warren County High School. She worked in tobacco fields and as a D.J. Melissa earned her first nursing degree in Hampton, VA. She worked as a welder in a shipyard to pay for her schooling. She went on to earn her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing and was pursuing her doctorate before becoming too ill to finish. She enjoyed all aspects of nursing.
Always an advocate for God, Melissa made sure her children and grandchildren knew about their Savior. She had a wonderful singing voice and was active in church choirs. Her African American heritage was a source of pride, and she greatly admired Barack and Michelle Obama.
In 2014, Melissa met Mike Fuller, the love of her life. She was working in Houston, TX, as a traveling nurse. They were married and resided in Grand Island.
Melissa had varied interests. She had her favorite shows: Lucille Ball “her girl,” Judge Judy, Food Network, Madea movies, and Star Trek. She was extremely happy to meet Star Trek movie star, Nichelle Nichols at Comicon in Denver. She also enjoyed collecting midcentury antiques. Melissa took pride in her appearance, always having her nails done was a top priority. She liked to get “dolled up” in fashionable items from her massive collection of clothes, shoes, jewelry, and eyeglasses.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Mike Fuller of Grand Island, NE; children: Stephen (Tatiana) Wallace of Pousbo, WA, QueNisia (Erick) Brooks of Waynesboro, VA, Alonda Wallace of Staunton, VA, D.J. Wallace of Hampton, VA; 11 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
Melissa was preceded in death by her parents.
