John F. Spotanski, 82, of Grand Island died Friday, February 3, 2023, at CHI St. Francis Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at St. Mary’s Cathedral with Father Joseph Broudou celebrating. Burial will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-7 PM with a Rosary service at 7 PM at Apfel Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Shiners Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, MN and Boy’s Town National Research Hospital in Omaha, NE. John was born on October 18, 1940, in Loup City, NE to Floyd and Gertrude (Kosmicki) Spotanski. He grew up and attended Loup City Public School, graduating in 1959. After which he farmed.
On July 9, 1966, John was united in marriage to Delores Elstermeier at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island and he worked for Fairacres Dairy and then as a route salesman for Metz Baking for 30 years. After he retired, he worked at Midwest Research in York, NE.
John was a member of the Platt-Duetsche. He enjoyed Polka dancing, raising cattle and loved animals of all kinds especially cats and dogs. He loved spending time with his grandson, Dawson.
Survivors of the family include wife, Delores of Grand Island; children: Jason Spotanski of Palmer, NE, Christy (Craig) Dubbs of Grand Island; grandson, Dawson Cox; step-granddaughter, Anneliese Dubbs both of Grand Island; siblings: Betty Aalborg of Giltner, NE, Ron (Kathy) Spotanski of York, NE, Pat Spotanski, Don (Cindy) Spotanski, Marge Schaffer all of Loveland, CO, Carol Mullen of Houston, TX, Carl Spotanski of Loup City, NE, David Spotanski of Indianapolis, IN; brothers and sisters-in-law: Norm Elstermeier, Delane (Annette) Elstermeier, Gary (Darlene) Elstermeier all of Grand Island, NE, Geraldine (Myron) Norskov of Humphry, NE, Marilyn (Jerry) Puppe of Coleridge, NE, Aldene (Lonnie) Stewart of St. Paul, NE, Darlene (Elmer) Haight of Lakewood, CO, and Renee (John) Herman of Wood River, NE.
John was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dortothy Kwapnioski; and sister-in-law, Alberta Larkowski.
