James Opp

James W. Opp, 77, of Aurora formerly of Wood River, died April 30, 2022, at Memorial Care Center in Aurora. Funeral service will be 1:30 PM Thursday, May 5, 2022, at St. Pauls Lutheran Church with Pastor Bill Pavuk officiating. Burial will follow at the Grand Island City Cemetery. James “Jim” was born on September 17, 1944, in Grand Island to John W and Elaine (Sundermeier) Opp. He grew up on a farm near Wood River. He attended District 44 and Walnut Junior High schools. Growing up he was in 4H Club raising and showing beef calves. With his father’s assistance he raised sheep and sold their wool. They were very busy during lambing season and the whole family was involved.

James was a member of the Eagle’s Club and a lifelong member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church. When he was young, he enjoyed golfing, but later was unable as his legs weakened. James was an avid Husker fan, enjoyed bowling, playing with Mickey the family dog, and playing cards with family and friends. He was a favorite with his niece and nephews.

James will be missed by his sisters: Shirley (Dale) Holst of Longmont, CO, and Marlene (Bill) Mersch of Aurora, NE and his five nephews and one niece; and many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
