Gene A. Knehans, 88, of Grand Island, NE died on Monday, February 23, 2026 at Tiffany Square with his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Julie Knehans by his side.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, February 28, 2026 at the Grand Island City Cemetery, Rev. Bill Pavuk is officiating. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation. Apfel Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Gene was born on June 26, 1937 in Red Cloud, Nebraska to Rudolph and Emma (Sundermeier) Knehans. He grew up in Hastings and graduated from Hastings High School with the Class of 1954.

He was united in marriage to Marilyn Kroger on October 6, 1957 in Hastings, NE. After which the couple moved to Columbus. The two later divorced. On December 21, 1998 he married Rosetta VonSeggern. The couple lived in Grand Island where he worked at Nash Finch until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church and the VFW. He enjoyed Nebraska Football, the Denver Broncos, fishing, NASCAR, and horse racing. He loved animals. But above all, he loved his family.

He is survived by his children: Tammy (Steven) Jensen, Michael (Julie) Knehans and Kenneth Knehans; stepchildren: Kathy (Daniel) Wik, Bernie (Charlotte) VonSeggern and Eric (Mary) VonSeggern; grandchildren, Chris (Ana) Jensen, Heather (Richard) Pieczonka, Keith (Nichole) Jensen, Jamie (Travis) Luhr and Carrie Knehans; numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren; and sister, LaVona (Donald) Taylor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife Rosetta.
