Evelyn Till, 94, of Hastings, NE died on Monday, June 16, 2025 in Lincoln, NE. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at Apfel Funeral Home in Hastings, NE. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 5 to 7 PM at Apfel Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date.
Evelyn Till was born on April 5, 1931, the first child to Reynold E. and Hazel M. (Wells) Johnson in Anoka, Nebraska, as Reynold was running the very first gas station in the area. After her sisters, Veryle and Mona came along, they started singing together at very early ages. They were billed at many social events, church services, and community gatherings. Evelyn was confirmed in the Lutheran Church and graduated high school in Butte, NE. She worked at Anderson's Grocery store in Wausau, NE, then attended one year at North Park College in Chicago, where she was chosen to travel with the college choir. She had many life-long friends from both Wausau and North Park College. Evelyn then married Gordon E. Till who became a dentist in Aurora, NE. She always continued to sing in the church choirs, and a women's choir. She helped to start Christian Women's Club in Aurora. Eventually, Gordon became an orthodontist and they moved to Hastings, NE. Evelyn helped start the beginnings of the Hastings Crossroads Center. They continued living in Hastings through their retirement years.
She is survived by her three daughters: Pam (Jim) Scherer, now of Clarkson, NE, Mitzi (Tim) Dungan, now of Lincoln, NE, and Charity (Dave) Lewis, now of Black Canyon City, AZ; six grandchildren: Justin (Maria) Scherer, Jesse (Jennifer) Scherer, Danielle (Bear) Pardun, Cody (Reina) Lewis, Charles Dungan, Nick (Grace) Dungan; and five great-grandchildren: Remi, Cole, Ella, Rhett, and Mikah.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gordon; sister, Veryle (Guy) Condreay; in-laws: George and Clara Till, George and Effie Till, Joanne and Bob Stultz, and Ruth and Dick Haafke; and nephew, George Till Jr.
