David G. Dwyer

With profound sadness in our hearts, we share the passing of an amazing husband and incredible father, David G. Dwyer, 67, who went Home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on July 30, 2026.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, August 6, 2026 at Apfel Funeral Home in Hastings. Burial will follow in the Parkview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM on Wednesday, August 5th at Apfel Funeral Home in Hastings. 

David was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on October 6, 1958. Having a childhood unlike other children his age, he was adopted by his grandparents, George and Margaret Dwyer at an early age which changed his life entirely for the better and helped shape him into the man he was as we knew him to be.

At an earlier age in his life, David married Mary Basilico. To this union, he had one son, Scott Dwyer. They later divorced.

David married the love of his life, Laura Hoefker, on April 12, 1982, and to this union, he had his second son, Jonathan Dwyer.

David enjoyed several things in life in various ways. He was primarily more into intellectual or artistic aspects of life, such as volunteering with the Omaha Community Playhouse, enjoying music of various genres, and even writing. David was a member of Hastings Jaycees, and after this, became enthusiastic about working with the Boy Scouts of America as a Pack Leader, helping shape young boys into young men of character.

In his free time at home, David would find pleasure in collecting stamps and coins from yesteryear. He wasn’t a major sports fan, but he enjoyed bowling with good company, and he took pleasure in watching at least the occasional Cornhusker game — even though he would always find some way to compare them to the team he relished more: the Oklahoma Sooners.

Family was of utmost importance to David, always finding time and means to support those he loved most dear. He even cherished the friendships with those he held close to his heart. David was often quiet and observant of humankind, and as those who knew him could attest, once he’d get to know you, he then would become the exact opposite. There would be times (maybe too many to count) where he would love to share a good conversation with anyone, recalling anecdotes that often would surprise, mostly as to how he remembered them.

Although David had quite a varied history of jobs throughout the years to help provide for his family, the one he held in the highest esteem was his last, which was working as a custodian for Hastings Public Schools. It is here he met several new people he not only respected as coworkers, but admired and treasured as true friends, many of whom, to summarize his words, “had his back” when he needed them most, and he truly valued each and every one, as well as what they did for him.

David and his family wish to give enormous appreciation and gratitude to each and every one of his physicians, nurses, caregivers, and hospice personnel for all the care and support you provided him in his time of need.

David was predeceased by his adoptive parents, George and Margaret Dwyer; his first son, Scott Dwyer; his parents–in–law, Gerhard and Wanda Hoefker; and a brother–in–law, Eric Hoefker. David is survived by his wife, Laura Dwyer; son, Jonathan Dwyer; brother–in–law, Paul (Jadine) Hoefker; sister–in–law, Myra (Steve) O’Denius (and sons Wes and Tim); sister–in–law, Betty (Dan) Brousseau (and sons Ryan, Erik and Adam); sister–in–law Peggy (Shane) Bonacci (and son Gabe), and various other family members
