Bonnie Yost

December 3, 1938 — January 1, 2026

Grand Island

Bonnie Yost, 87, passed away peacefully at home after a short illness, on New Year's Day, 2026.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, January 12, 2026 at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island with Derek Apfel officiating. Burial of ashes will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be an hour prior to the start of the service.

Bonnie was born in Grand Island, Nebraska on December 3, 1938. She was the daughter of Ruben and Clara Gerlach Yost and received her education at The Beatrice State Home in Beatrice, Nebraska, before special education services were available in her home community of Grand Island.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Doris A. Yost Preisendorf. She is survived by her special friend, her "cowboy" Kenny; her guardian, Veronica Soto; many friends and acquaintances; as well as extended family.

Bonnie was a gifted historian, remembering people, places, and stories that she would share freely with anyone who would ask. She was proud that her father was a railroad engineer and took her on train rides as a child. She liked to report that she was her father's favorite, and she missed him often.

Bonnie spent much of her life helping others. She told stories of assisting those less fortunate when she lived in Beatrice, and this spirit of service continued when she returned to her home community in 1972 to become part of Mid-Nebraska Individual Services (MNIS). She was an active member of the Wednesday Group, volunteering and raising charitable dollars for community members in need. Although she always wanted to work, she eventually enjoyed time at the Grand Island Senior Center several days a week, as she tried to retire.

The Special Olympics held a special place in Bonnie's heart. She competed in track, basketball, bocce, and bowling, and loved reconnecting with old friends at events. She was equally proud to participate in the Harvest of Harmony Parade each year, riding the MNIS or Special Olympics float and volunteering to play the part of Mrs. Claus several years in a row.

Bonnie loved to travel and took many trips with The ARC. Her favorite destinations included Disneyland, Disney World, and of course, Memphis to visit the home of Elvis Presley. Bonnie made friends wherever she went and remembered them fondly. When her health concerns necessitated a move to Mosaic in York, Nebraska in June 2025, she made the most of her time there, sharing her love of Elvis with new friends.

Bonnie lived a full life, rich with friendship, service to others, and joy. She will be remembered for her generous spirit, her wonderful stories, and the light she brought to everyone she met.
