Hastings resident, Richard B. Dick Oberg, 76, died Monday, December 29, 2008, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, Hastings, NE. Services will be Friday, January 2, 2009 at 2 PM at the First St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Hastings, NE with the Rev. Adam White officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, NE with military rites. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 31, 2008 from 12 noon to 6 PM and Friday, January 2, 2009 from 8 AM to 11 AM at the Brand-Wilson Funeral Home, Hastings, NE and one hour prior to service time at the church. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.brandwilson.com. Richard was born June 20, 1932 to Benjamin T. and Opal (Denton) Oberg in Hastings, NE. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1950. He was an All State Basketball player at Hastings High School. He served in U.S. Navy from February 23, 1952 to November 24, 1953. He married Donna Jean Choquette on June 25, 1954. He graduated from Hastings College in 1956. He played on the varsity basketball team. He was a teacher and coach at Kenesaw High School and Hastings Jr. High School from 1956 to 1961. He was founder and owner of Hogans Sporting Goods Store in Hastings, Kearney, and Omaha, NE from 1961 to 1981. He was a lifelong resident of Hastings. He was a member of the First St. Pauls Lutheran Church, the Elks Lodge where he served as Exalted Ruler from 1992 to 1993 and District Deputy. He was also a member of the Eagles Aerie #592, life member of the VFW, the American Legion, former member of the Hastings Lodge #50, and the Scottish Rite Tehama Shrine all of Hastings, NE. He volunteered for and enjoyed watching and participating in sport activities. He is survived by his wife Donna Jean, 5 daughters, Jeanne Oberg and Janet Muller both of Fremont, NE, Judy Brown and husband Bob of Hoonah, Alaska, Joan Tapia and husband Al of Parker, CO, and Joyce Hoskins and husband Brad of Wayne, NE. 6 Grandchildren, Julie and Jim Muller, Katelyn Tapia, Katie, Ben and Molly Hoskins, 1 brother, Robert Oberg and wife Adell of Estes Park, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials may be given to the First St. Pauls Lutheran Church or the American Diabetes Association.
