Marvel J. Fisher

Marvel J. Fisher, 83, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at the Grand Island Veterans Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Kearney, with the Rev. Stanley Murdoch officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Oxford City Cemetery at Oxford. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. Mrs. Fisher was born Sept. 25, 1929, at Oxford to Lynn and Nellie (Quinn) Van Matre. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Fisher. Survivors of the immediate family include two sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Connie Fisher of Stafford, Texas, Steve and Dana Fisher of Seattle, Wash.; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Randy Hays of Kearney; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ardyth Thorne and Phyllis Weber, both of Lebanon, Ore.; and one sister-in-law, Eula Mae Van Matre of Tennessee. Her family moved often between various Midwestern and Western communities. Marvel graduated from high school in Portland, Ore. She married Harold R. Fisher on April, 3, 1949, at Oxford. They resided in Oxford, Stockton, Kan., and St. Paul. Upon their retirement, they moved to Grand Island in 1988. Marvel was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Grand Island Christian Women's Club. Mrs. Fisher was a homemaker as well as working in banks in Stockton, Kan. and St. Paul. She treasured the time she spent with her family and grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Wayne Van Matre; one sister, Zona Longsine; three brothers-in-law, Robert Thorne, Gerald Weber and Richard Longsine.
