Lawrence O. Wissing

Lawrence O. Wissing, 81 of Alda, died Sunday, January 27, 2013 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Services will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at St. Leos Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Torpey officiating. Private family burial will be at Westlawn Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be on Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 pm with a 7 pm Scripture Wake Service at the church. Memorials are suggested to St. Leos Catholic Church. Apfel Funeral Home of Grand Island is caring for the family. Lawrence was born on June 11, 1931 at St. Libory, the son of Herman and Sophia (Eich) Wissing. He grew up in St. Libory and received his education at St. Libory Catholic School. After his schooling he worked at the St. Libory Elevator. Lawrence was united in marriage to LaVonne Wiese on October 17, 1951 at the St. Libory Catholic Church. The couple lived in St. Libory for 7 years where he worked for Burlington Northern Railroad before moving to Alda. Lawrence worked at the Ordnance Plant for Cornhusker Farms and also worked construction for several years. Lawrence was a maintenance carpenter for 12 years at Grand Island Public Schools before retiring in 1997. Lawrence was a member of St. Leos Catholic Church and Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, golfing, Husker athletics, and especially his grandchildren. Lawrence is survived by his wife LaVonne of Alda, three sons; Martin L. and Karman Wissing of Wood River, Merrill J. and Betty Wissing of Shelton, Michael A. and Denise Wissing of Wood River, two daughters; Renee and Robert Racek of Albion, and Rhonda and DeWayne Dymek of Alda, 10 grandchildren and three step grandchildren, one great-grandchild and four step great-grandchildren, three brothers; Pete and Elaine Wissing of Grand Island, Herman S. and Doris Wissing of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and Leo and Erma Wissing of Hastings, two sisters; Rosetta and Alvin Reimers of Grand Island and Mary and Don Nielsen of St. Libory.
