Joseph L. Hoer

Joseph L. Hoer, 86 of Grand Island died Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at Tiffany Square Care Center, Grand Island. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Apfel Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael McDermott officiating. Burial will be in Grand Island cemetery. Visitation will be 12:00 until service time on Saturday at Apfel Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Resurrection Catholic Church, Grand Island. Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family. Joseph L. Hoer was born, December 18, 1925 at Laddonia, Missouri the son of Chris & Rose (Hideseck) Hoer. He received his education with the Martinsburg & Laddonia, Missouri school systems, graduating with the class of 1944. He entered the United States Army, March 8, 1945 and was honorably discharged on January 5, 1947. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal. He was united in marriage to Virginia Nauenburg on April 10, 1951, at Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. The couple resided on a farm until 1956 at which time they moved to Council Bluffs. He was first employed as a carpenter and later as the Supervisor of Maintenance for the Omaha Housing Authority. He retired in 1989 and they relocated to Grand Island in 1991, where he remained. Mrs. Hoer preceded him in death on April 17, 1992. He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church of Grand Island and the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Council Bluffs, Iowa. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a life time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #1347. He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include three brothers, Francis Hoer of Omaha, NE, Chris Hoer Jr. of Duncan, NE., Casper Hoer of Glenwood, Iowa, three sisters, Magdalene Stone of Tuscan, Arizona, Rose Batenhorst of Omaha, NE. and Helen Bartoli of Tuscan, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Virginia, son, Lawrence Larry Hoer, one brother, Bernard Hoer and a sister, Christina Swartz.
