John Edward Miller

Hastings resident, John Edward Miller, 96, passed away Sunday, August 4, 2013 at his home at College View Assisted Living. Rosary will be recited Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at 7:30 pm at the Apfel Funeral Home Chapel (formerly Brand-Wilson). Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 am on Wednesday, August 7, at St. Michaels Catholic Church with Father Michael Houlihan as celebrant. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be held from 4 pm up to Rosary time in the chapel. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.brandwilson.com. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be given to the Pope Pius VII Knights Assembly. John was born October 30, 1916 in Buffalo County, NE, the son of Anton and Augusta (Sueper) Miller. He attended School District 12 and graduated from high school at Odesa, NE in 1933. Following his graduation he attended the Nebraska Business College of Commerce in Hastings. In 1937 he began his employment with Paxton and Gallagher in Hastings and managed the North Platte branch until the business was closed in 1950. At that time he joined the Gamble Robinson Company where he worked in the Hastings and Lincoln offices and retired from the Omaha branch office in 1978. In 1940 he married Irene Beiriger in Hastings. He served in the Regimental Headquarters of the 274th Infantry Regiment of the 70th Division of the United States Army from August 18, 1943 until his honorable discharge in April 24, 1946, serving in France and Germany and the Berlin Headquarters after the wars end. John was a member of the Knights of Columbus Chalice Club and was the First Faithful Navigator of the Hastings Assembly and obtained an Honorary Life Membership. He was also a member of the Lincoln American Legion, Eagles Club, Crosier Apostolate, St. Michaels Catholic Church and the Mens Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
