Guy Clement Sweet

Hastings resident, Guy Clement. Sweet, 101, died Saturday, June 21, 2008 at Perkins Pavilion, GSV, Hastings, NE. Services will be Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at 2 PM at All Saints Chapel, GSV, with the Rev. Charles Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Glenvil Cemetery, Glenvil, NE at 4 PM. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 24, 2008 from 12 noon to 9 PM at the Brand-Wilson Funeral Home and Cremation, Hastings, NE. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.brandwilson.com. Clement was born, April 1, 1907 to Guy R. and Estella (Anson) Sweet in Decatur, NE. He attended school in Burt County, NE he also attended the Grand Island Business College in 1925. He married Katherine Orr on February 15, 1928. The couple celebrated 80 years of marriage in February of 2008. Clement started farming with his father on a farm west of Decatur, later he moved from the farm into Decatur where he operated a service station and ran a tank wagon. In 1954 he moved to Fremont where he operated the Mobil bulk plant. He moved to Dillon, Montana in 1956 where he worked in a gold mill. He returned to Decatur 1958, again operating the service station and tank wagon. He became the mayor of Decatur in 1972 and he was the volunteer fire chief. After he retired he worked as a toll taker on the Decatur-Onawa Bridge across the Missouri River until he was 80. He and his wife moved to Hastings to Good Samaritan Village in 1987, living in a garden apartment, the Village Terrace, and the Villa. Because of failing health, Clement and Katherine moved to Perkins Pavilion in 2004. He is survived by his wife Katherine, daughter, Anita Willis , son and daughter in law, Philip and Evelyn Sweet, all of Hastings, NE, 6 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters and an infant brother. Memorials may be given to Perkins Pavilion or donors choice.
