Gladys Lorraine Wicht

April 17, 1922 — February 8, 2017

Gladys L. (Oelschlager) Wicht, 94 of Grand Island died Wednesday, February 08, 2017 at CHI Health, St. Francis, Grand Island, NE.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 13, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church, Grand Island with the Rev. Caroline Price-Gibson officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery. Visitation hours will be 4-7 p.m., Sunday, February 12, 2017 at the Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. Memorials are suggested to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, Boys Town Institute for Children with Communication Disorders, St. Judes Research Hospital or the First Presbyterian Church. Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family.

Gladys was born at Hayland, Nebraska on April 17, 1922 the daughter of William and Margaret (Frese) Oelschlager. The family moved to a farm three miles west of Hansen, Nebraska when she was a small child. She attended District #31 school in Adams County graduating from Hastings High School in 1940.

She was united in marriage to Christian Wicht on July 6, 1940 at Smith Center, Kansas and soon after, the couple moved to Buffalo, New York. They moved to Omaha, Nebraska in 1942, Bellevue, Nebraska in 1946 then to Grand Island in 1954 where they remained. Mr. Wicht preceded her in death on February 18, 2001.

She was a busy, full-time wife and mother. She loved her family, enjoyed music, writing, learning to write and speak German and learning Sign Language. She especially enjoyed meeting her Great Great Granddaughter Piper.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Platt-Duetsche Ladies Society.

Those left to cherish her memory include, three sons & daughters-in-law, Jack Wicht of Phoenix, AZ; Donald Wicht of Grand Island, NE; Dr. Robert & Janice Wicht of St. Libory, NE; six daughters & sons-in-law, Connie Newton of Lake Havasu City, AZ; Janet & Richard Dahlke of Harrison, TN; Linda & Chuck Fryzek of Burwell, NE; Lorrie Young of Fruita, CO; Kathleen & James Garrison of Gillette, WY; Cynthia Cooney, Kokomo, IN; 27 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Christian, three grandsons, Raymond Dahlke, Donald Wicht II, Matthew Zlomke, son-in-law, John Newton, a daughter-in-law, Cathy Wicht and her brother Lester Oelschlager of Kenesaw, NE.
