Hastings resident, Galen L. Maurer, 96, died Friday, March 2, 2018 at Perkins Pavilion, Good Samaritan Society, Hastings Village.

Services will be Thursday, March 8, 2018 at 10:30 AM at First St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Hastings with Rev. Joel Remmers officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 7, 2018 from 5 pm to 7 pm with family present at the Apfel Funeral Home, Hastings. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery at 1 pm with military rites by the Hastings Veterans Service. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.apfelfuneralhome.com. Apfel Funeral Home, Hastings is in care of the family.

Memorials may be given to the family to establish a memorial at a later date.

Galen was born June 4, 1921 to Charles and Effie Jane (Bell) Maurer in Shelton, NE. He attended Denman Public School and barber school in Omaha. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII, December 28, 1941 to May 17, 1945. He married Mary Jane Smiley on May 29, 1945, she passed away May 9, 1991. They owned and operated Gales Barber and Beauty Shop in Hastings for 42 years retiring in 1991. He married Marcia Kloppenborg on June 6, 1992.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW and Eagles Club both in Hastings.

Galen enjoyed spending time with family, camping, carpentry, fishing, traveling and dancing,

He is survived by: his wife Marcia of Hastings, two daughters, Pat (Dave) Gartner of Hastings and Peggy (Robert) Coffey of Grand Island, daughter-in-law, Cheryl Maurer of Cozad, stepson, Steve (Kathy) Kloppenborg of Omaha, and step daughter, Debra (Dan) Laux of Hastings, 9 grandchildren, Becky (Rodney) Hermann of Hastings, David (Misty) Gartner of Doniphan, Kelly (Andy) Nelson of Hastings, Jeff (Sandy) Coffey of Grand Island, Kurt (Amanda Young) Coffey of Kenesaw, Robert (Stacy) Maurer of Eustis and Alisa (Dave) McCoy, step grandson, Brent (Jolene) Laux of Juniata, step granddaughter Courtney Laux of Bellevue, and 17 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Mary Jane, one son Bob, one brother, Donald and one sister Thelma.
