Elmer Lee Layher

Elmer Lee Layher, 81, of Grand Island, died Tuesday, July 1st, 2014 at home surrounded by his family.



Funeral services will be held Monday, July 7th, 2014 at Apfel Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Ann Sukraw-Lutz will officiate.



Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 6th, 2014 at Apfel Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. Casual attire is requested.



Survivors of the immediate family are his wife, Evelyn Layher, of Grand Island; two daughters and their husbands, Joni and Dale Scheibe of St. Paul and Cindi and Ray Lindley of Grand Island, two grandsons, Kris Scheibe and Tony Lindley; two granddaughters, Jamie and Sara Scheibe and two great-granddaughters, Avah Scheibe and Reese Ellis all of Grand Island.



Elmer was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings.



Mr. Layher was born May 4th, 1933, in Cozad to Elmer R and Hazel (Beanblossom) Layher. He spent his childhood in Grand Island.



Elmer was united in marriage to Evelyn (Henry) on December 5th, 1952 and was drafted in the Korean War immediately following. Upon his return they made their home between Hastings and Grand Island until settling in Grand Island in 1966.



Elmer was employed in various trades and retired from Dominion Construction Company of Scottsbluff, Nebraska in 1995.



He was a member of the South Central Corvette Club and the Saddle Club.



He enjoyed a love of classic cars and keeping his 1958 Corvette in top shape for car shows. He also enjoyed woodworking and was an avid Nascar and Husker fan. He was a kind and generous man always putting his family first.



In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Central Nebraska Humane Society.
