Donald "Don" Phillip Carter

June 4, 1940 — September 21, 2016

Donald P. Carter, 76 of Wood River died September 21, 2016 at the Nebraska Heart Institute in Lincoln with his family by his side.



Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Wood River with Derek Apfel officiating. Inurnment will be in Wood River Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the family. Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family.



Don was born June 4, 1940 in Grand Island, Nebraska the son of John James Jr & Gladys (Deenier) Carter. He grew up in Wood River, receiving his education from Wood River Schools and furthered his education at Kearney State Teachers College, (University of Nebraska-Kearney).



He was united in marriage to Gwendolyn Janice Shiers, August 4, 1963 in Kearney, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Kearney, until moving back to Wood River to take over the family business, Carters Grocery. After selling the family business, Don became an Appliance Service Technician working for Peters Hardware/Appliance. He was joined by his oldest son and together they started Mid Nebraska Appliance Service in Wood River, later expanding into HVAC Service as well. He was later joined by another son and the company became Mid Nebraska Service. Don continued to be involved in the business until his retirement.

Don was a member with the Mason's for 27 years, four months, 29 days. He served as Master Mason in 1962

Don enjoyed fishing, reading, vacationing in the Black Hills, wood working, attending gun shows and spending time with his family.



Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Janice Carter of Wood River, three sons & daughter-in-law, Doug Carter, Greg & Michele Carter, Michael Carter all of Wood River as well as six grandchildren, Arianne & Trevor Yilk, Alexic Carter, Kylee Sutton, Lyric Carter, Braden & Reece Carter, foster grandchildren, Samantha & Mike Martinez, foster great grandchildren, Logan, Brooklyn. Broughan & Landyn Martinez.



Don was preceded in death by his parents,.
