She grew up in the Lincoln and Waverly area, graduating from Waverly High School with the class of 1942, and then attending Business College in Lincoln. She moved to Grand Island in 1951 when she started Billie Anderson School of Dancing. Billie shared her passion for dance with students for over 43 years and then continued to help the new owner long after her retirement.

She was united in marriage to Warren A. “Mike” Monnington, August 14, 1955 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Grand Island. The couple made their home in Grand Island their entire married life.

Billie was truly a female trail blazer as she owned several businesses over the years, the Charm Chalet Beauty Salon, Fashion Two Twenty Cosmetics, and of course Billie Anderson School of Dancing. She was also involved with the Chamber of Commerce, performed and choreographed musicals with the Grand Island Little Theatre and had many dance students who went on to teach and perform professionally.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Grand Island Saddle Club, Elks Club, YWCA and the Liederkranz. Her hobbies included wintering in South Padre Island, Texas and summering at South Bend Lake near Lincoln. Her greatest joys in life came from spending time with and entertaining her family and friends, and especially going dancing with her husband, Mike.

Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters & sons-in-law, Kellie & Larry Hemingway of Kingwood, Texas, Shawn & Dr. Tim Jacobs of Grand Island, five grandchildren, Jeffrey Hemingway, Andrew Hemingway, Sara Hemingway, Lindsay (Nick) Purcell , Luke Jacobs, and one brother-in-law, Boyd Clements of Elmwood, Nebraska; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Warren A. “Mike” Monnington, two sisters, Donna Clements and Greta Ann Dudley, and one brother-in-law, Melvin Dudley.
