Wayne Allen Weiss

March 12, 1949 — November 6, 2014

Wayne Allen Weiss, 65, and Rosalee Jolene (Sullwold) Weiss, 62, of Grand Island died Thursday, November 6, 2014 as a result of a plane crash in Paulding County, Ohio.



Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 17, 2014 at Peace Lutheran Church, Grand Island with the Rev. Michael Reiners & Rev. Keith Grimm officiating. Inurnment will be in the Grand Island Cemetery at a later date. Family will be receiving friends from 4-6 p.m., Sunday, November 16, 2014 at the Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Civil Air Patrol, Peace Lutheran Church of Grand Island, Crisis Center, of Grand Island or to the Grandchildren to be designated at a later date. Apfel Funeral Home is assisting the family.



Wayne A. Weiss was born March 12, 1949 at Grant, Nebraska the son of Edwin & Irene (Engel) Weiss. He grew up in Holdrege, Nebraska and received his early education at R1 by Holdrege, graduating from Holdrege High School with the class of 1967. He received his Bachelors Degree from UNL in Business Administration in 1971, where he as affiliated with the ROTC Program. He entered the United States Air Force, July 26, 1971 serving during the Vietnam Era with his first Air Force assignment as a Pilot Instructor at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Oklahoma receiving his honorable discharged June 16, 1975.



Rosalee J. Weiss was born, February 7, 1952 in Kearney, Nebraska the daughter of Phillip & Irene (Witmer) Sullwold. She grew up in Elm Creek, Nebraska where she received her education from Elm Creek Public Schools.



Wayne A. & Rosalee J.(Sullwold) were united in marriage on January 30, 1971 at Elm Creek, Nebraska. The couple resided in numerous communities while Wayne was serving in the United States Air Force. They resided in Enid, Oklahoma, Panama City, Florida, Colorado Springs, Colorado and Concordia, Kansas before moving to Grand Island in 1978 where Wayne was involved in the Banking Industry, Agricultural Services and was a Pilot Instructor.



They were members of Peace Lutheran Church, Grand Island. Wayne was a member of AOPA (Air Craft Owners & Pilots Association). He enjoyed flying the Whooping Crane Spotters and was a past member of Civil Air Patrol. Rosalees enjoyed bowling and gardening but as a couple their greatest joys came from caring for their grandchildren.



Those left to cherish their memory include two daughters and sons-in-laws Susan & Mark Fonyonga of Papillion, Nebraska, Patricia & Bryan Bydalek of Grand Island, five grandchildren, Natalee, Braxton & Rebecca Fonyonga and Spencer & Fletcher Bydalek.



Rosalees brothers and sisters-in-law include, Donald & Joyce Sullwold of Kearney, NE, Karl & Lana Sullwold of Kearney, NE, Richard & Vicki Sullwold of Elm Creek, NE, sisters and brother-in-law, Phyllis Broadfoot of Kearney, NE and Nancy & Leland Stone of Elm Creek, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip & Irene Sullwold and brother-in-law, Ed Broadfoot.



Waynes mother, Irene Weiss of Holdrege, Nebraska, brothers & sisters-in-law include, Donald & Rita Weiss of Colorado Springs, CO. and Marvin & Lonna Weiss of Holdrege, NE. sisters & brothers-in-law, JoAnn & Jim Cogil of Johnston, Iowa and Janice & Brent Stehlik of Lincoln, NE. Wayne was preceded in death by his father, Edwin Weiss.
