Virginia Avine Mccurdy

Virginia A. McCurdy, 89 of Grand Island, died Monday, June 17, 2013 at Golden Living Center, Park Place, Grand Island, Nebraska. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 20, 2013 at First Christian Church, Grand Island, with the Rev. Dr. Scott Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Arborville Cemetery, Polk, NE. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2013 from the Apfel Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church. Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family. Virginia was born September 9, 1923 in Ladysmith, Wisconsin the daughter of Reverend Fred & Alice (Fisher) Sawyer. She graduated from Estherville High School in Estherville, Iowa and attended Drake University at Des Moines, Iowa. She was united in marriage to John McCurdy, July 14, 1943 in Estherville, Iowa. Mr. McCurdy became an ordained minister and the couple resided in various communities as he served churches in Nebraska and Iowa. Mrs. McCurdy was a homemaker. Reverend McCurdy preceded her in death in 1998. She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Grand Island. She was very involved in the woman's services of her church as well as volunteering for the Veteran's Hospital from 1965 until 1997. Survivors include one son and daughter in law: Dr. Fred & Paige Kindle-McCurdy of Harlingen, Texas; two grandsons, Brian McCurdy & Scott McCurdy, and 1 grand daughter Isabella; four great grandsons (Wyatt, Eli, and Forrest, and Finnegan McCurdy), and 1 great granddaughter (Lucy McCurdy). She was also preceded in death by her parents (Fred and Alice Sawyer), one brother (Willard Sawyer), three sisters (Lorraine Sawyer, Helen Grey, and Hilda Weede).
