Vedor Bloomquist

Vedor Bloomquist, 91, of Grand Island died Sunday, August 17, 2014, at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Adam Snoberger will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery with military honors provided by the United Veterans Honor Guard and U.S. Army Honors Detail.

Visitation will be from 5 to7 P.M. Wednesday at Apfel Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran School.

Vedor Bloomquist was born December 24, 1922, at St. Edward, Nebraska to Emil and Alice (Samuelson) Bloomquist. He grew up and received his education in St. Edward.

He entered the U.S Army on January 15, 1945, where he served with the 1st Cavalry Division in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre during World War II. Mr. Bloomquist was awarded his honorable discharge on November 16, 1946, at the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Following his military service he made his home in Grand Island and worked as a plant operator for the City of Grand Island Electric Utility until his retirement in 1987.

A deeply religious man, he loved Jesus and read his Bible every day that he could.

In retirement, Vedor enjoyed spending time on the farm restoring tractors. He was also a General Motors car enthusiast and enjoyed watching NASCAR races.

He also thoroughly enjoyed his time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He will be remembered for the twinkle in his eye and his mischievous smile.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Veda and Gary Fredrick of Grand Island; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Harlan and Marilyn Bloomquist of Grand Island and Mary Bloomquist of Grand Island.

Additional survivors include three grandchildren, Brittan Middleton of Grand Island, Kylee Fredrick of Lincoln and Cole Fredrick of Omaha; and two great-grandchildren, Macie and Madden Middleton.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Weston Bloomquist.
