Harvard Resident, Robert LaVerne Hoppens, 86 passed away Friday, December 13, 2013 at the Aurora Hospital, Aurora, NE.

Services will be Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 11 am at the Harvard United Church of Christ with Pastor Dave Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Harvard Cemetery with military honors provided by the Harvard American Legion. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 18, 2013 from 3 pm to 5 pm at the United Church of Christ in Harvard and up till service time Thursday. Arrangements by the Apfel Funeral Home, Hastings, NE.

A memorial will be established in his memory.

Robert was born June 30, 1927 in Clay County, NE, the son of Edward August and Martha Frieda (Arp) Hoppens. Following his graduation from high school Robert was a member of the United States Army during World War II. During his lifetime he had resided in Harvard, NE, Okayama, Japan, Lincoln, NE, Dallas, TX and San Diego, CA and besides his military service he had been employed as a private flight instructor and mechanic.

He was a member of the American Legion and his hobbies included flying, riding motorcycles, cars and automobile and model cars.

He is survived by one daughter, Jackie Young of Folsom, CA, one son, Jim Hoppens of Northglen, CO, one step-daughter, Lisa McDonald of Cold Springs, TX, and two step sons, Todd Alley and Stewart Alley both of Lincoln, NE, 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, and one sister, JoAnn Pettyjohn of Port Angeles, WA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Keith and Dean Hoppens and a step son, Scott Alley.
