Richard F. N. Janes, 80, of Grand Island died Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Golden Living Center Lakeview in Grand Island. Services will be at 11 am on Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island with Rev. Rod Armon officiating. Interment will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 9 am until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family or the Alzheimers Association. Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family. Richard was born on May 11, 1933 in Boone County, NE, the son of Francis and Juanita (Stephens) Janes. He grew up in rural St. Edward and received his education at St. Edward High School, graduating with the class of 1950. Richard was united in marriage to Betty Stearley on May 9, 1953 in Grand Island. He worked at Sherwin Williams until 1966 and then became a self employed painter from 1966 to 1973. Richard then worked for the Lutheran Hospital and St. Francis Hospital until retirement in 1996. Richard and Betty enjoyed camping, fishing, and traveling. He loved to read Louis LAmous books which he collected through the years. Richard is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Betty L. Janes, sons Ronald and wife Cathy Janes of Boise, ID, and Dan and wife Becky Janes of Tucson, AZ, daughters Nancy and husband Charles Sweet of Tyler, TX and Theresa and husband Daniel Lane of Sargent, NE, six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a sister Viola Wolfe. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ebbie, Donald, and Lyle, sisters Opal Glendening and an infant sister.
