Melvin F. Obst

Melvin F. Obst, 89 of Grand Island died Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island, NE.



Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, December 31, at the Royal Cemetery in Royal, Nebraska, with interment following. Arrangements were made under the direction of Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. (www.apfelfuneralhome.com)



Melvin F. Obst, the son of Frank H. and Marie (Baden) Obst, was born July 22, 1926, in Wayne, Nebraska.



Melvin grew up in rural Nebraska and was a farmer by trade, farming in the communities of Wayne, O'Neil, Atkinson and Orchard, Nebraska. He later was employed at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant and the Co-op Elevator in Aurora. Melvin will always be remembered for his love of playing cards and teasing humor.



Melvin is survived by one sister, Norma Courtney of Ramsey Care Center in Des Moines, Iowa; niece Arlone Farber of Omaha, Nebraska; nephews Kevin Courtney (Theresa) of Iowa City, Iowa; Chuck Courtney (Kim) of Des Moines, Iowa; Larry Obst (Sue) of Battle Creek, Nebraska; Bob Obst (Jan) of Lincoln, Nebraska; Dennis Rewinkel (Cherie) of Newman Lake, Washington; Kenneth Rewinkel (Kris) of Sunnyvale, California; a host of great nieces and nephews and friends and staff at Wedgewood Care Center.



Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Herbert Obst, Alfred Obst, Arnold Obst and Norman Obst; sisters Louise Ruschmann, Helen Rewinkel and Bonnie Obst; sister-in-law Gladys Obst; brothers-in-law Claus Ruschmann, Walter Rewinkel and Charlie Courtney; nephews Donald Obst, Roger Obst and Gerald Ruschmann.
