Maurice W. Sapp

June 9, 1932 — November 11, 2021

Maurice W. Sapp, 89, of Grand Island, NE passed into life eternal on Thursday November 11, 2021, at CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island.



Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday November 17th at the GI Free Church in Grand Island. Pastor Jeff McKearney and Pastor Paul Nauman will officiate. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery located at the west edge of York, NE.



Visitation will be from 4 to 6 P.M. Tuesday November 16th at the Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island.



Memorials are suggested to Evangelical Free Church, Christian Resource Center or the Gideons International, Grand Island Camp.



Mr. Sapp was born June 19, 1932, at Tilden, NE to William Aaron and Mamie (Millikin) Sapp. He married June M. Burnham in York, NE on January 20, 1952.



Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sondra and James Terry of Cozad, NE and Terri and Michael Jensen of Grand Island, NE; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Rebecca Sapp of Tulsa, OK; NE; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews.



Mr. Sapp grew up and received his education in York, graduating from York High School. He graduated from the Lincoln School of Commerce in 1950.



Maurice’s business career included brief ownership of The Credit Bureau of York, and a short time in the insurance business before joining the staff of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce. He also served as Executive Vice President-Manager of the Beatrice Chamber of Commerce before entering the savings and loan business where he served as Vice President of State Federal Savings and Loan in Lincoln. He was a Federal Examiner for the Federal Home Loan Bank Board and then joined Equitable Savings and Loan Association, now Equitable Bank, serving as Executive Vice President. He spent the last 23 years of his working career as President and CEO of Home Federal Savings of Nebraska in Lexington, NE.



Maurice was active in many organizations. He chaired the legislative Committee of the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce and served as President of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce, the Nebraska League of Savings Institutions, the Lexington Foundation and Chairman of the Dawson Area Economic Development. Corp.



He was baptized in the First Christian Church, York, NE at age 19 where he served as Church Treasurer. Maurice was Chairman of the Deacons and Board of Elders of Southview Christian Church in Lincoln. He was also Chairman of the Diaconate of the First Baptist Church in Grand Island. After moving to Lexington, he served as Chairman of the Trustees at Parkview Baptist Church and later as Treasurer of First Christian Church in Lexington, NE. He was an active member of the GI Free Church in Grand Island and the Gideons International at the time of his death.



Maurice loved doing things with his children and grandchildren. He also like to fish and enjoyed traveling, especially spending winter, after retirement, at a Christian RV Park in Alamo, TX, where he and his wife participated in missionary outreach programs. They also volunteered at the Creation Museum in Hebron, KY; the Personal Energy Transportation facility (PET) in Penny Farm, FL and on numerous occasions at Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) in Warrenton, MO.



He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, June Sapp; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Dolores and Donald Swanson and Phyllis and William Speidel.
