Mary Fairbanks

December 18, 1921 — November 5, 2020

Mary Jane Fairbanks, 98, of Wood River, NE passed away peacefully in her home on November 5, 2020.



There will be a private family inurnment of Mary’s ashes in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Hall County Humane Society as Mary had a great affection for her four-legged pets. Apfel Funeral Home is assisting the family.



Mary was born December 18, 1921 in Torrington, WY to Charles and Bertha (Engbert) Flury. Mary grew up in Torrington and graduated from the Torrington High School.



She married Lyle Fairbanks of Wood River, NE. Lyle passed away in 1993.



Mary was a homemaker and served as a school board member of District #5 of Hall County. She was also a Sunday School teacher and had been a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wood River.



Mary will be remembered for the twinkle in her blue eyes. Her love of her family, especially those grandkids. She tried to make a hand embroidered baby blanker for each one.



Mary was always ready to play cards with grandkids, go fish with grandpa, make dozens of frosted sugar cookies, and Apple or Lemon pies. Much to the delight of her family.



Mary is survived by her daughters, Deloris Teachworth (Gene) Robb of Superior, NE, and Sharon Camp of Wood River, NE; son, Dr. William D. (Patty) Fairbanks of Cheyenne, WY; daughter-in-law, Sarah Fairbanks of Stillwater, KS; 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.



Mary was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Anna and Lillian; brother, Howard; husband Lyle; daughter, Barbara Bruce and son, Dr. Wendell Fairbanks.
