Lois M. Scott

Lois M. Scott, 86, of Grand Island died Friday, March 28, 2014, at Brookefield Park Skilled Nursing Center in St. Paul.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Lonnie Logan will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Lois Marjorie (Harris) Scott was born March 17, 1928, at Sidney, NE to Otto Ross and Alta (Sullivan) Harris. Her mother, Alta married Jens P. Jensen and at the age of two, Lois, her siblings and parents moved to Grand Island, NE. Her step-father owned a barber shop across from the Burlington Northern Depot.

Lois received her education in Grand Island Public Schools and graduated in 1946. She worked at Kaufmans Dime Store and the telephone company.

She met her husband Joseph E. Scott of Covington, KY when he was stationed at the Grand Island Air Base. They were united in marriage on August 16, 1946. To this union, three sons were born; Dennis, Randall and Keith. Lois followed her husband who was serving in the Air Force. They lived in several states as well as England, Germany and the Philippines. Following Mr. Scotts retirement, the couple moved to Seward, NE. While living in Seward, she was employed at the Seward Hospital. Mr. Scott passed away in 1975, and in 1976, Lois returned to live in Grand Island.

When she returned to Grand Island, Lois was employed at Millers Appliance Store, Brandeis and Miller and Paine. She then worked for St. Francis Medical Center for seven years before retiring.

Lois was a member of the Congregational Church and VFW Auxiliary 1347. She served three years as President and District Vice-President in VFW. Upon her retirement, she represented her church on the Church Women United Board. She was elected to the state board for two years. In 2001, Lois was honored with the Most Valiant Woman award. She was also active in the United Congregational Church Womens Circle.

Lois, along with her friends, enjoyed the concerts sponsored by the Grand Island Concert Association. One of the songs she most enjoyed was, Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford.

Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law; Dennis and Mary Scott of Grand Island, Randall Scott Sr. of Phoenix, AZ and Keith and Kathy Scott of Las Vegas, NV.

Additional survivors include her grandchildren; Brian, Shawn, Lori, Michael, Jennifer, Paul, Steven, Randall Jr. and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father; Otto Harris, her mother and step-father; Alta and Jens Jensen, daughter-in-law; Nancy (Noah) Scott, three sisters; Floy Looper, Ethel Rohring, and Vera Williams, and one brother; Earl Harris.

Memorials are suggested to the United Congregational Church of Grand Island.
