Leland D. Bredthauer

Leland Dale Bredthauer, 86, of Grand Island, died Sunday, April 16, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Society.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Apfel Funeral Home Chapel, Grand Island, with Rev. Thomas Schneider officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Cairo, Nebraska. Visitation hours will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, April 21, 2017 at the Apfel Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to Heartland Lutheran High School, New Hope Christian School, Cairo, or Christ Lutheran Church in Grand Island. Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family.

Leland Dale Bredthauer was born December 15, 1930 in Mira Valley, south of Ord, Nebraska, the son of D. Herbert and Mildred (Wells) Bredthauer. He attended parochial school in Mira Valley and later school in Scotia, graduating from Wood River High School in 1948.

He was united in marriage to Betty Helen Peters, September 20, 1953 in Grand Island, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Wood River where he farmed until his retirement. He later worked at the north Wal-Mart store in Grand Island. His wife, Betty, preceded him in death on October 21, 1992.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Grand Island, the District 16 school board, the Harrison township board and was active as a 4-H leader for many years.

Those left to cherish his memory include two sons & daughters-in-law, Gordon & Cindy Bredthauer of Wood River, Dr. Bryan & Trudy Bredthauer of Omaha, Nebraska, daughter & son-in-law, Dr. Annette Bredthauer & Terry Marcotte of Belleville, Kansas, six grandchildren, Jacob Bredthauer, Kendra Miller & fianc Brent Reith, Kristen Swiercinsky, David Bredthauer, Rose Bredthauer, and Eric Bredthauer, and one brother and sister-in-law, Vernon and Pat Bredthauer of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Betty Bredthauer, an infant brother and an infant sister.
