Kathryn M. Desmet

Hastings resident, Kathryn M. DeSmet, 80, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at her home, the Kensington, Hastiings, NE. Memorial service will be Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 11 AM at the Lakeside Community Church of the Nazarene, in Hastings, NE. with the Rev. David Speicher officiating. Private family burial at Juniata Cemetery, Juniata, NE. Book signing will be Friday, January 16, 2009 from 9 AM to 5 PM at the Brand-Wilson Funeral Home, Hastings, NE. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.brandwilson.com. Kathryn was born October 25, 1928 to Elwyn L. and Elizabeth Elsie K. Anderson in Hastings, NE. She graduated from Juniata High School and attended Hastings College. She married Richard L. Batt and they divorced. He preceded her in death in November of 1979. She remarried later to George DeSmet on December 29, 1968. She worked at the Hastings Regional Center for 25 years. Kathryn loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren. Her cat Patches was an excellent companion for 12 years. She highly enjoyed watching NICK-AT-NIGHT and TV Land to pass the time. She liked to work on her Wordfind puzzles and loved to travel and vacation. She looked forward to the holidays with family. She was an excellent cook and loved to entertain. She always wanted to please others and make them feel special. She truly enjoyed listening to music and loved going on walks and staying fit. Kathryn was a member of the Lakeside Community Church of the Nazarene, in Hastings, NE. She volunteered at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital and was in the Auxiliary in Hastings, NE. She is survived by daughters, Candace K. Fagot and husband Randal J. of Lexington, NE, and Sandi Smidt and husband Lonnie of Hastings, NE, 8 grandchildren, Susan Schmiett and husband Tom of Gothenburg, NE, Michael Buckley and wife Teresa of Kokomo, IN, Kelly Lynn Rich and husband Matt of Kearney, NE, Brooke Ann Lloyd and husband Chad of Omaha, NE, Jared Lee Fagot and wife Keri Saulsbury of Lexington, NE, Tatum Elizabeth Oaks and husband Johnny of Lexington, NE and Amanda Elizabeth and Todd Richard Smidt of Hastings. 26 Great grandchildren, Cade Ogburn, Alex Schmiett, Dustin Koubek, Laureen Schmiett, Katelynn Koubek, Chad Schmiett, Amanda and Erin Koubek, Christiana and Trae Buckley, Braden and Isabelle Rich, Isiah, Jordan and Jalen Starks, Kara Houlden, Chasidy Kelderman, Jeremy Callahan, Jade, Jaxon and Klair Fagot, Cody, Jackson, Ian, Spencer and Lily Elizabeth Kathryn Oaks. 3 Great great grandchildren, Layla, Sarah and Tyler James. She was preceded in death by her parents and both husbands. Memorials may be given to the Lakeside Community Church of the Nazarene, in Hastings, NE.
