Janis was born February 24, 1928, in the old farm house at Shelton Academy, the daughter of Victor and Lucile (Beaman) Bascom. At 26 years of age, Lucile passed away after surgery complications, leaving Janis (age 7 months) and her father alone. Luciles cousin, Louise (Jacobsen) came to help care for Janis. About a year later, Louise and Victor had fallen in love and were married. She became the only mother she knew.

Janis grew up in Shelton, she attended Platte Valley Academy, Union College in Lincoln and received her masters degree from Kearney State College. Her career as an accountant and teacher took her to the Wyoming Seventh-day Adventist Conference and Sunnydale Academy in Missouri. She spent all but a few years of her life in Shelton. She taught classes and was Business Manager at Platte Valley Academy for many years.

Her love of Elkhounds and Pugs were a passion of hers. She loved entering dog shows and received many awards and trophies. Some of her dogs attended obedience school. She was a former member of the Grand Island Kennel Club. She and her mother could usually be found with scissors, needle, and thread, or a sewing machine. She enjoyed camping and traveling with her parents in their retirement years.

She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Conference Church and held many church offices through the years.

Memorials are suggested to the KS/NE Conference Educational Scholarship Fund. Education was an important part of her life.

Survivors include relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her birth mother, mother, and father.
