Inez D. Underhill

April 16, 1920 — January 6, 2009

Hastings resident, Inez Underhill, 88, died Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at Good Samaritan Society, Perkins Pavilion, Hastings, NE. Memorial service will be Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 2 PM at the First United Methodist Church, Hastings, NE, with the Rev. Dr. Samuel R. Rathod officiating. Private family burial will be at Parkview Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, January 9, 2009 from 9 AM to 9 PM at the Brand-Wilson Funeral Home, Hastings, NE. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.brandwilson.com. Inez was born April 16, 1920 to Herschel and Nell ( Akin) Jones in Haviland, Kansas. She graduated from Haviland High School; attended Fort Hays Kansas State College in Hays, Kansas and taught school in a one room school house near Haviland, Kansas. On June 1, 1941 she married Lee Underhill, and during the next 31 years lived in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Idaho, Staten Island, NY and Iowa, where her husband served appointments in the United Methodist Church. In 1966 Inez was voted Mother of the Year during her daughters senior year at Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa. The Underhills moved to Hastings, NE in 1972, where Dr. Lee Underhill taught as Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Hastings College. Inez was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Hastings, NE. Where ever she lived she was actively involved in the local Methodist Church serving in religious education, music ministry, numerous committees and the United Methodist Women. She held local, district and state offices, including delegate to National Conference. In various locations she served in ecumenical groups such as Church Woman United. Inez was a member of the Hastings College Faculty Womens Club, YWCA, Choralettes and American Literature Club. She was a charter member of her PEO chapter GZ, holding several offices including president, and was a 50 year member of the PEO organization. As her chapters representative she was instrumental in securing and overseeing funds from the PEO International Peace Scholarship program for a recipient from Africa. Inez was a woman of strong Christian faith, devoted to her husband, generous and caring to her family and friends. She is survived by a daughter Janet Chisholm and husband Don of New Jersey, a son Warren of California, 3 grandchildren, Greg and Mike Chisholm and Jessie Underhill, 2 sisters Vida Ruth Beck and Ima June Helton both of Kansas. She was preceded in death by her husband Lee, December 10, 2003, her parents and brother Joe. Memorials may be given to an organization of your choice.
