Ilene Ruth Sittler

March 4, 1922 — July 20, 2014

Ilene R. Sittler, 92, of Grand Island died Sunday, July 20, at Tiffany Square.

Services will be at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 23 at Apfel Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. Charles Gregory will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Family will greet friends from noon until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ms. Sittler was born on March 4, 1922, to Horace and Alta Parks in Bladen, Nebraska in Webster County. She lived in Campbell and Upland, Nebraska where she received her education. She moved with her parents to Elm Creek, Nebraska where she met and married Leo E. Hickstein in 1941. They moved to Grand Island, Nebraska in 1954. Mr. Hickstein passed away in 1987. She married Frank Sittler who passed away in 1997. She married Gerald Spahr in 1999.

She belonged to the First Baptist Church, Rebecca circle, Eagles Aerie, Platt Deutsch Society, and the Swinger band. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, quilting, and playing cards. She was especially proud of her work as a volunteer at the Grand Generation Senior Center.

Survivors include: her husband Gerald Spahr of Grand Island; two daughters, Linda Maddox of Houston, Texas and Sandra LeVeen of Gainesville, Florida; a son, Dennis Hickstein of Bethesda, Maryland; 5 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 3 step children; 5 step grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Iva Schroeder and Ruby Callendar, one brother George Parks, her husband Leo Hickstein, and her husband Frank Sittler.

Memorials are suggested to the Grand Generation Senior Center.
