Henry Yurk

Hastings resident, Henry Yurk, 76, died Sunday, December 7, 2008 at his home after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Services will be Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 10:30 AM at Peace Lutheran Church in Hastings, NE with the Rev. Marcus MacKay officiating. Burial will be at Parkview Cemetery with military rites. There will be no viewing, visitation with family present will be Tuesday, December 9, 2008 from 5 PM to 8 PM at the Brand-Wilson Funeral Home, Hastings, NE. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.brandwilson.com. Henry was born June 17, 1932 the youngest of four children to Carl Sr. and Mable (Thiel Yurk in Hastings, NE. He received his education in the Hastings Public Schools graduating from Hastings Senior High in 1950. After his graduation he entered the united States Air Force serving from October 1951 until his honorable discharge in October of 1955 proudly serving his country during the Korean War. Before his discharge he married the love of his life, Betty Jeanette, daughter of Dan and Esther (Ross) Hein on June 6, 1954, at the First Baptist Church in Hastings, NE, where they made their home for 54 years. After his discharge, Hank along with his brother Carl co-owned and operated Carls Caf(c) from 1955 until 1967, he then worked as a salesman at Uerlings Furniture in Hastings, NE from 1967 until retirement in 1994. Following that, until his death he spent many years following his four grandsons around the state in all their High School and College sports endeavors. He was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Hastings, NE serving as an Elder until he was no longer able to act in that capacity. He was also a past member of the Hastings Jaycesss, Hastings Kiwanis and the Elks Country Club. He is survived by his wife, Betty of Hastings, NE, 2 sons, Dan and wife Nancy of Hastings, NE and Tim at home, 1 daughter, Lisa Zimmerman and husband Mark also of Hastings, NE. 4 grandsons, Nathan Yurk of Lincoln, NE, Tyler Yurk, Michael and Beau Zimmerman all of Hastings, NE. Also a foreign exchange student son and daughter-in-law, Ian and Sandy King and children Nicole and Jamie of Johannesburg, South Africa. 2 brothers, Carl Jr. of Hastings, NE and David of Omaha and 1 sister, Vera Winsor of Hastings, NE and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew. Memorials may be given to Peace Lutheran Church in Hastings, NE.
