Harold "Red" G. Ahrens

Harold G. “Red” Ahrens, 94, of Grand Island died Friday, January 25, 2019, at CHI Health, St. Francis, Grand Island.



Graveside services will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Island. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to donor’s choice. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Mr. Ahrens was born, October 13, 1924 at St. Michael, Nebraska the son of William & Emma (Hongsermeier) Ahrens. Upon the death of his mother, he was then raised by his step-mother, Wilma (Thompson) Ahrens. He attended rural schools and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1943.



He entered the United States Navy in January 1945 and obtained the rank of Seaman 1st Class having served during World War II in the Philippine Islands. He was honorably discharged August 22, 1946. He returned to Grand Island and began his employment as a lineman for the Southern Nebraska Power District. He worked for the company 40 years and retired in 1987.



He was united in marriage to Iris Joy Hatcher on October 28, 1953 at Grand Island, Nebraska, where the couple made their home.



He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, Grand Island, VFW, American Legion and the Platt Deutsche Society. He especially enjoyed fishing, gardening and watching baseball.



Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters; Corinne Ahrens, Julie (Jim) Pedersen both of Grand Island, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Iris in 2014, a son, Harold, Jr. and daughter Linda.
