Glenwood H. Hargens

Glenwood H. Hargens, 95, of Cairo died Friday, January 23, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the Cairo United Methodist Church with Rev. Cathryn Love officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Cairo. Visitation will be on Wednesday evening from 4 to 7 pm at the church in Cairo. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to the familys choice. Apfel Funeral Home of Cairo is serving the family.

Glenwood was born November 13, 1919 on a farm west of Grand Island, Nebraska to Rudolf and Freida (Harders) Hargens. At age four they moved to Grand Island where he attended Jefferson Elementary School into the third grade. After living on several farms south of Cairo and completing his grade school years at Districts 13 and 37 in Hall County, Glenwood and his family made their home in Cairo where he attended and graduated from Cairo High School.

Glenwood was united in marriage to Jane H. Benton on April 2, 1938 in Wood River, Nebraska, and they continued to live in Cairo where he worked as a machinery salesman for the Cairo International Harvester Store. The following year he started his trucking business which he operated until being inducted into the Army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1944. After completion of his basic training at Camp Hood, Texas, he was sent to the South Pacific where he served with the 24th infantry Division until returning by way of Tokyo, Japan to Fort Sam Huston, Texas, where he was honorably discharged in 1946.

Upon his return from service, he and Jane lived in Grand Island, as he was farming land in the Ordinance Plant. In 1949 they moved to a farm southwest of Cairo where he farmed and operated his cattle feeding business. In 1971 they built a home in Cairo and Glenwood lived there until moving to the Good Samaritan Village in Grand Island in July, 2012.

He was a member of the Cairo United Methodist Church, past member of the Cairo Masonic Lodge 324, lifetime member of American Legion Post 333 and served on the Board of Directors of the Pathway Bank (State Bank of Cairo) for 52 years.

He enjoyed feeding cattle, traveling with his wife, playing cards and fishing.

Survivors include: son, Ron Hargens and wife Linda of Cairo; daughter, Kathy Baasch and husband Dennis of Cairo; 9 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Jane; a son, Don Bruce; a daughter-in-law, Laura; a great-grandson, Michael David; a sister, Lavern Morris; and good friend, Lois Quaife.
