Gary P. Hoos

Gary Paul Hoos, age 74, of Grand Island, Nebraska passed away May 2, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer.



Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Friday, May 7th at Grace Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Daniel Bremer will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.



Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM Thursday, May 6th at the Apfel Funeral Home – Grand Island. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date.



Gary was born on November 1, 1946, in Rushville, Nebraska to Paul and Viola (Barth) Hoos. He grew up in the Rushville, Overton, Eddyville and Sumner areas. He attended rural schools, Eddyville Public School and graduated from Sumner Public School in 1965. Later, Gary attended McCook college and Kearney State College.



Gary served two years in the United States Army. After serving in the Army, he attended Grand Island School of Business graduating with a degree in Accounting. On March 18, 1967, he married Joanne (Jeffery) Hoos of Miller. To this union, three children were born: Paul (PJ), Becky and Mark.



Gary successfully operated an insurance agency for Shelter Insurance. After his 33-year-career in insurance, Gary & Joanne built a cabin at Calamus Reservoir, where he could enjoy his love of fishing. They enjoyed having family and friends at the cabin. No one started the day hungry because Gary had a love for making breakfast. Gary loved attending all his grandchildrens’ activities as well as spending time with his family. Gary and his brothers started an annual family gathering on Memorial Day, 1986, which is well attended each year.



Gary is survived by wife, Joanne; daughter, Becky (Jason) Groves of Gretna; sons, Paul (Sally) Hoos and Mark (Michelle) Hoos of Grand Island; grandchildren, Brionna (Alex) Czarnek, Kylie Groves, Mackenzie Hoos, Keaton Groves, Isabelle Hoos, Miranda Hoos, Sammi Hoos, Raygan Hoos, Miles Groves, Braxtyn Hoos, Bensyn Hoos and Mattyx Hoos and two great- grandchildren; sister, Dixie Line; brothers, Tony (Deb) Hoos, Ron (Shari) Hoos, Doug (Carol) Hoos, sister-in-law, Shirley (Rod) Swanson, brothers-in-law, Mick (Cindy) Jeffery and Tom Cunningham, and numerous nieces & nephews.



Preceding him in death were his parents, brother, Larry; brother-in-law, Doug Line; sister-in- law, Nancy Cunningham; nephew, Jon.
