Eugene L. Muth

Eugene L. Muth, 91, of Ravenna, formerly of Shelton died Friday, April 5, 2013 at Good Samaritan Society in Ravenna. Services will be at 10:30 am on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Shelton. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell. Visitation will be one hour before service time at the church. Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River is serving the family. Eugene was born on March 2, 1922 to William and Lydia Muth on the family farm near Creston, Nebraska. He attended St. Johns Parochial School located south of Creston. In 1942, he was drafted into WWII. He entered the service on October 21, 1942 and was a member of the 381st infantry Division of the United States Army where he served as an assistant gunner while stationed in the Philippines. He was awarded the Bronze Star during the Leyte Campaign along with other various medals. On May 19, 1943 he received an honorable discharge from the Army. After the service, he was united in marriage to Edna Marty of Leigh, Nebraska on November 26, 1947. Together they raised four daughters. Most of his life he worked as a farmer. He was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Shelton. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports and Husker football. He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister, his wife Edna, his daughter Jolaine Widup, and his son-in-law Wayne Thonen. He is survived by: sister Vernetta Wagner of Lincoln, daughter Kathy Thonen of Kearney, daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Marlin Matulka of Seward, son-in-law Cliff Widup of Shelton, and daughter and son-in-law Jacqueline and Thomas Trampe of Sumner.
