Derald Nelson

July 8, 1926 — January 20, 2015

Hastings resident, Derald L. Nelson, 88, died peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at Perkins Pavilion, Good Samaritan Society, Hastings-Village.

Services will be 10:30 am, Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the Apfel Funeral Home Chapel, Hastings. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.apfelfuneralhome.com. Apfel Funeral Home, Hastings, is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Derald was born July 8, 1926 to Lawrence and Ruth (Clouse) Nelson in Colon, NE. He served during the Korean Conflict in the United States Army as a sergeant from October 3, 1950 to September 22, 1952 he then transferred to the Army Reserves from September 23, 1952 to September 20, 1956. He married Mary Spotanski on March 11, 1980 in LasVegas, NV. Derald worked as a truck driver for many years and drove truck for Becker Transportation from 1983 to 2006.

Derald enjoyed seeing his friends every Saturday at the Barrel Bar, visiting with family and friends over the holidays and watching football, especially Big Red Football.

He is survived by his wife Mary of Hastings, one son, Derald Derrie Nelson, Jr. of Geneva, NE, two daughters, Jennifer Nelson of CA and Pamela Sanders of Blue Springs, MO, two grandchildren, Kristine Radke of Lincoln, NE and Michael Sanders of Blue Springs, MO and one great granddaughter, Chloe Sanders, two brothers, Irvin (Kathy) Nelson of Vallejo, CA and Carl (Vicki) Nelson of Wahoo, NE, three sisters, Sharon (Rick) Lee of Inverness, FL, Shirley Lundgreen of Lincoln, NE and Phyllis Crist of Cedar Bluff, NE, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Mervin and Robert Nelson and an infant brother, Donald Nelson.
