David Allen Wooden

October 21, 1946 — December 9, 2012

David A. Wooden, 66, of Cairo, died peacefully, on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at his home in Cairo. Services will be at 10:30 am on Friday, December 14, 2012 at the Cairo United Methodist Church with Rev. Melanie Adams officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Cairo. Visitation will be on Thursday evening from 4 to 7 pm at the Cairo United Methodist Church. Memorials are suggested to the Cairo Quick Response Team. Apfel Funeral Home of Cairo is caring for the family. David A. Wooden was born on October 21, 1946 in Loup City, Nebraska, the son of Roy and Louise (Lane) Wooden. He grew up in Arcadia and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1965. He attended Kearney State College until enlisting in the United States Air Force on June 28, 1968. He served during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged on June 21, 1972. David was united in marriage to Shirley Sutton on July 4, 1969 at the Christian Church in Alliance, Nebraska. The couple lived in Mountain Home, Idaho and then Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany before his discharge from the Air Force. They lived in Loup City for a year before moving to Cairo in 1973, where they have lived since. David worked at New Holland in Grand Island from 1972 until his retirement in 2003. David was a member of the Platt Deutsch, the American Legion, and he was a Mason. He enjoyed reading, hunting, fishing, collecting guns, his 1964 Chevy Chevelle, Husker Baseball, driving around the country side with friends, his family and especially his grandchildren. David is survived by his wife, Shirley Wooden of Cairo, a son and daughter-in-law; Paul and Leslie Wooden of Woodland, Washington, a daughter and son-in-law; Vickie and Paul Janulewicz of Omaha, grandchildren; Wyatt and Emily Wooden of Woodland, Washington, Paul, Felicia, Grayson, Kian and Hadley Janulewicz of Omaha, his mother; Louise Wooden of Kearney, brothers and sisters-in-law; Richard and Jeanne Wooden of Ogallala, Robert and Tamy Wooden of Kearney, and Roger and Beverly Wooden of Cairo, brother-in-law; Dwain and wife Sharon Sutton of Oshkosh, Nebraska, and sister-in-law; Judy Sutton of Alliance, NE, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Wooden.
