Former Hastings resident, Arthur Art Leroy Akins, 85, passed away Monday, October 4, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Society, Millard, NE. Services will be Friday, October 8 2010 at 11 AM at the Zion Lutheran Church, Hastings, NE with the Rev. Dan Heuer officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Hastings, NE. Visitation will be Thursday, October 7, 2010 from 5 PM to 9 PM at the Brand-Wilson Funeral Home, Hastings, NE. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.brandwilson.com. Art was born February 15, 1925 to Jesse and Ida (Detty) Akins in Kansas City, Kansas. He attended Creston High School in Creston, Iowa. He served in the United States Navy from January 11, 1943 to March 11, 1946. He married Lillian May Rose on November 10, 1946 she passed away July 21, 2010. They moved to Hastings in 1944. He worked at the Navy Ammunition Depot in Hastings, NE from 1946 to 1957 and then the United States Postal Service from 1958 to 1969. He and Lillian owned King Koin Laundry and Dry Cleaners in Hastings, NE from 1961 to 1987. They retired in 1987. In 1997 they moved to Fremont, NE and later Omaha, NE. At the time of his death he was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont, NE and a active member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Hastings, NE for over 50 years. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He is survived by 4 daughters, Barbara Thomas and husband Charles of Catonsville, MD, Sharon Stubben and husband Bruce of Fremont, NE, Patricia Kristofic and husband Guy of Aliso Viejo, CA, and Marcia Thiele and husband Ed of Omaha, NE. 7 grandchildren, Mellissa Helligso, Molly Scritchfield and husband Tyler, and Joe and Anthony Thiele all of Omaha, NE, Kyle and Daniel Kristofic of Aliso Viejo, CA and Charles Thomas of Catonsville, MD. 4 great grandchildren, Brody and Hogan Helligso and Ainsley and Abigail Scritchfield one sister, Lois Wathen of Lincoln, NE and one brother, Alfred and wife Carol of Sidney, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lillian, 2 grandchildren, Brenda Kristofic and Nathan Thiele, one infant sister, Betty Jean, one sister, Artis Mae Evans, and one brother Glen. Memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran Church in Hastings or Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont.
